Brussel, May 6th 2025
Reporting from the Science-Policy event “Agroecological transition of food systems in Africa - Evidence for research and development policies in Africa-EU collaboration”. Soils4Africa Project, together with eight other Horizon 2020 projects joins policy makers from the European Union and various African policy making bodies in Brussel on the 6th of May 2025 to present its main outcomes and policy recommendations for promotion of sustainable agricultural intensification and soil health improvement.

Amongst all the policy recommendations derived from all the projects, soil monitoring and improving soil health takes a central position. Key soil-oriented policy recommendations include:
  • In order to scale agroecology, soil conditions need to be taken into account
  • A soil information system is instrumental for informed decision making
  • Soil4Africa is a continental SIS for continental and regional analysis and policy development. For detailed analysis, policy formulation and local advisory, more detailed SISs need to be developed
  • Soil data and soil information for the African continent needs harmonization and a strong push towards application, through developing practical use cases with stakeholders at the regional and national levels.
We are pleased to release the policy brief, which was developed through intensive exchange and consultation amongst researchers and policy makers.
